DO YOU THINK LOCAL PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE A GREATER SAY IN HOW LOCAL PUBLIC BUDGETS ARE SPENT?

The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has published a draft national strategy on participatory budgeting. Participatory budgets or ‘Community Kitties' give local people a direct say in deciding how some of their local public services budget should be spent. This means engaging residents and community groups to discuss spending priorities, make spending proposals, and vote on them, as well giving local people a role in the scrutiny and monitoring of the process. The government wants participatory budgeting to be used in all local authority areas by 2012.
