The DDPA has joined forces with the South Yorkshire Police to raise the public’s awareness of the reasons behind disabled parking bays.
The first campaign was held at the ASDA supermarket Carcroft, with their permission members of DDPA and SYP targeted the disabled parking bays there. DDPA members were available to hand out leaflets on disabled car parking facilities and give the interested public more information on their organisation and campaign. The SYP were there to approach members of the public abusing the disabled parking spaces.
After a full day’s campaigning many more people are aware of the necessity for the disabled spaces.
On Friday 25th August the group held our second disabled bay watch, this time at Tesco’s in Balby with the help of SYP. The day started at 1pm with the display and table being setup while members of the DDPA and SYP were being interviewed by the Doncaster Free press, BBC Radio Sheffield and Trax FM.
Doncaster Star also had an article on page 2 Thursday night about our visit to Tesco.
Through out the afternoon many customers thought twice about parking in the disabled bays especially after seeing the police patrolling the area. We have had favourable comments from the public at both supermarkets such as:-
“Glad you are trying to do something about it.”
“It’s about time something was done about it. People need more room than non-disabled people.”
Towards the end of our session at Tesco’s, Councillor Glyn Jones showed his interest in our campaign by making an appearance and offering his help.
We are hoping to target more supermarkets over the coming year, to publicize our campaign.
